New Year's fireworks in Sydney

New Year’s fireworks offer magic photo opportunities. But it is a tricky subject to photograph – you are shooting in the dark, the subject keeps moving and disappearing.

Here are 10 tips on how to get better photos.

How to get better photos:

Find a suitable location to take photos. Look for a place with a view of the sky. Try to get the fireworks in front of you, not above.

Try to find landmarks, buildings or water that helps indicate where the picture is taken.

• Good fireworks photos require long exposure. Use 2-3 seconds or longer.

Drop the ISO down to 100 or 200. High ISO can cause digital noise to your picture when you’re shooting longer exposures.

Turn off the flash.

• If the camera has a separate setting for fireworks, so use this.

• Alternatively, use the program “P” on the camera.

• If you have a SLR camera then use the “B” setting. The shutter remains open until you release and press the shutter again. The shutter will stay open until you’ve caught some fireworks. Use the manual control of the camera, set aperture of approx. 5.6.

Keep the camera steady. Tripods are the best way to stop camera shake and it’s best to use a remote trigger. Alternatively, the camera can be put on railings or cars to keep it steady. To avoid small vibrations when clicking the shutter, use your self-timer.

Check your memory card and make sure your battery is fully charged since you will probably be taking lots of pictures.
