How to avoid dark photos

Sunny beach

Tired of getting dark photos?

How can you get your image bright enough?

The image sensor in the camera must receive just enough light!

How do you fix that?

This is done by adjusting the opening of the light emitted through the aperture, and the time the sensor is illuminated (closing time). You should also adjust the ISO value.

For most pictures we leave the camera to determine the aperture, shutter speed and ISO value, and usually it goes okay. But in some cases you get a picture in which all or part of it is too dark.

Today’s cameras are very good at determining how much light is needed for it to be correctly exposed. The age of the camera determines how well it does the job.

Here are some solutions to avoid dark photos:

Take a better picture

SUN

Situation: You sit on the beach, it is a bright summer day and the kids build sand castles. You take a picture of the kids by the sea and the sky as the background. When you later look at the picture, the sky is fine, but the kids are completely dark.

Cause: The sky and the sea cover most part of the picture so the camera thinks this is the main subject. The foreground gets very dark in comparison.

Solution: Use the flash. It may sound strange when it is so light, but since the foreground is so dark, the flash illuminating it, without affecting the background, and thus both are correct.

DARK ROOM

Situation: You take a picture in a dark room. The camera uses the flash to light up, but the background of the image, where much of the activity occurs, gets too dark.

Cause: The built-in flash in most cameras does not reach more than a few meters. This means that it can be used indoors in small rooms and portraits, but it cannot illuminate large areas far away.

Solution: Increase the ISO value, if it is possible. The background will get lighter. But it can make the foreground too light. If you cannot increase the ISO value, it’s actually little you can do. The only option is to move closer to the subject.
