Canon EOS 500D continues the success story with affordable SLR. Since the inception nearly six years ago with the model EOS 300D, the series have been a big success. The EOS 500D is the latest model in the series and is the successor of EOS 450D. The camera is known as the EOS Rebel T1i in North America.
The most important upgrade from the 450D is the ability for HD video recording, such as in the professional model, the EOS 5D Mark II.
The EOS 500D has an image resolution of 15 megapixels, the same as the EOS 50D. EOS 450D got 12 megapixel. Compared to the EOS 450D, EOS 500D delivers slightly better picture quality overall.
Besides the new video feature, the LCD screen is improved compared to the EOS 450D. The screen has the same 3-inch (7.6 cm) size as the EOS 450D, but the screen resolution has increased from 230,000d to 920,000d (same as for the EOS 50D). This means that it is easier to see the details in the picture during playback, but even more important is that the screen is far more realistic by video recording, even when shooting with Live View.
Another improvement over the EOS 450D is that you now can make setting options directly from the LCD screen, without going through the menu.
If the HD video and 15 megapixels (rather than 12 megapixels) is negligible for your preferences, the EOS 450D is a just as good buy.
